This American Bandstand performance is the perfect Beach Boys video. Dennis is jubilant, Carl and Al are non-entities, Brian is innocent with a dash of unsettling, and (speaking of unsettling) Mike Love is a sex offender.

Dennis is so stoked in the above still. It’s awesome. He’s honestly the only Beach Boy who was ever remotely beachy or boyish. Next to him is Mike Love. The perfect pictures of Mike Love come from later in his career. They’re the ones where he tries to look like Mick Jagger but ends up looking like a drag queen trying to look like Mick Jagger. This picture of him is good simply because it communicates that even as a young man, he was still creepy as fuck.

It’s a little blurry, but yes: he’s biting his lower lip.

Creepy. As. Fuck. (Not you, Dennis. Keep doin’ what you’re doin’.)

And now for some delightful shots of Brian acting out the lyrics in the chorus. Here he’s miming a steering wheel to communicate the idea of “get[ting] around on the town.”
“I’m a real cool head.”
“I’m making real good bread.” Yes, he’s doing the Italian hand signal for money. (Is it actually Italian? I don’t know. Call it deductive reasoning based on the following evidence: Italian stereotypes.)
So there’s the Beach Boys in a six-frame nutshell. And yes, those are the lyrics from the chorus of “I Get Around.” I’m a real cool head, I’m making real good bread. What a wonderful song.
